Robert McNay, age 40 (= born c. 1830),
a tailor born in Ohio, father "foreign born," mother American.
NOTE: His father being "foreign born" is a significant
clue — see research on the 1840 and 1830 Ohio Censuses.
He would be 10 or 11 in 1840, and probably in his first year, if
even yet born, in 1830. Both those censuses name only family
heads, so the number of other males shown in the various age
categories is crucial.
He has real property worth $500 (equivalent to about $8,500 in 2008),
and personal property worth $100.
The family is living near the center of town, with schoolteachers, physicians,
a pharmacist, and merchants / clerks as neighbors.
Martha (Collins) McNay,
age 33 (= born c. 1837), born in Indiana, both parents American born,
with four sons, all born in Indiana:
Charles McNay, age 15 (= born c. 1855), a farm laborer who
also attends school,
James McNay, age 14 (= born c. 1856), "at school,"
John McNay, age 10 (= born c. 1860), "at school," and
Mark McNay, age 3 (= born c. 1867).
