Thomas Anthony Beck
12 May 1844 baptismal record Likely in early May of 1844, George Beck and Jane Foxglove / Foxcroft had their illegitimate son, Anthony, baptized in the Church of England chapel of their home town, Holme. George was a laborer "in the mill," referring to a local textile mill. The baptism was performed by an "officiating minister," T.B. Ashley. About five months later (28 Sep 1844), they married. According to Geoff Pegg, who provided the record image below, the confusion with Jane's maiden name —(Foxglove vs. Foxcroft in other records)— may lie in the vicar simply being a bit deaf, or perhaps because George and Jane rarely attended services, so were not well known. Note: Eight baptisms are recorded on this page, and three of these children are marked "illegitimate" — a small sample, of course, but one that at least suggests a surprising (38%) out-of-wedlock birth rate. Clearly, Victorian-age proprieties had not trickled down to the "lower classes." Image courtesy of Geoff Pegg, Burton-in-Kendal Parish (2012): |
Parish of Burton, Holme District, County Westmorland year 1844, page 5. How long between birth and baptism? In general, Anglican parish registers do not include both birth and baptismal dates. Historically, infants were baptized quite soon after birth, due to very high childhood mortality rates. But beginning in the early 19th century this interval lengthened, closely matching the slow decline in perinatal death which began with the Industrial Revolution. Thus, while in 1644 or 1744 it might be reasonable to conclude that a May 12th baptism implied a birth on May 8th or 10th, by 1844 such an assumption would be quite unwarranted.
